Mrs. Thurmond's Fourth Grade Class
Dear Parents,
Happy Spring! I hope the students enjoyed their vacation and are now rested and ready for the last nine weeks of the school year. We have lots to do in preparation for our end-of-grade tests and I continue to remind the kids to stay focused and respectful of their learning and that of their classmates.
B.O.O.K. Tournament
Our 4th grade B.O.O.K. tournament or “March Madness” in April. finally started last week. This encourages students to read a variety of chapter books and gets students excited and talking about what they’re reading. Students will vote on the book pairings. They really enjoy persuading their peers to vote for specific books, and reading new titles, as well as discovering some old favorites. What an exciting time this is!
Health Alert
Spring is in the air and the pollen is high. Some of our students have more problems with allergies and asthma at this time of year. Wake County policy is that if a child needs to stay inside during recess for such difficulties, a doctor's note is required.
Keep up the great reading!
Thanks for your support at home. You are creating wonderful lifelong habits.
Many students have mentioned the lack of books at home to read. The public library is a great source for books. If your child does not already have a library card this would be a great time to apply for one. The closest library is on Newbern Ave. Books can be checked out for three weeks and there’s more than enough to choose from.
If you are looking for books on your child’s level you can go to Scholastic.com and type in a title or an author. If you choose guided reading level you will see the Letter/level of that book. It’s a great resource. I am in the process of linking it to my webpage. Students will grow at least two or more levels if they are reading books on their level and lots of them. Happy Reading!!
Pencils & Kleenex Please
Keep sending those pencils and boxes of kleenex in! They go quickly. We really appreciate those parents who continue to stock our pencil supply. Thanks to all of you.
Reminders
Report cards go home on Tuesday. The 4th quarter began last week.
Have a great week!
